Ontario ferry electrification: shore charging stations

Electrical and shore-network scope across four terminals: apparatus, protection and control, SCADA and reforming.

In 2018, Ontario's Ministry of Transportation launched ferry electrification with two Damen-built vessels designed for shore-charged electric operation (Wolfe Islander IV and Amherst Islander II). First of its kind at this scale in Canada, it relies on shore charging stations that recharge batteries in minutes between crossings. The two routes carry more than a million passengers a year. FORWA covered the electrical and shore-network scope at the four terminals (Kingston, Marysville, Millhaven and Stella): pre-operational switchyard apparatus testing, protection and control commissioning, SCADA (IT/OT) integration with RTAC programming (SEL-735 / SEL-751 relays), and DC converter capacitor reforming. One partner, from HV apparatus through to IT/OT convergence.
